Obituary

Robert (Bob) William McArthur, beloved by family and friends, passed away on Monday, May 17, 2021 after a brief illness at the age of 93. He was born in Boston to Robert McArthur and Elizabeth Forrest Ross McArthur from Scotland. His mother died in childbirth and he was raised by his Dad and stepmother, Abbie Drillio McArthur. Earning a degree in Business Administration he graduated from Babson College in 1950. Bob was a dedicated family man who adored his wife of 66 years, Lelia, his three children Robert, Scott (Lisa), and Carol Amedeo (Jerry), his granddaughters Katie, Amanda, and Megan, step-grandchildren Nicole Griffith (Jack), Danielle Adler (Jason), Elyse Greenbaum (Josh), and his step-great grandchildren Brody, Vaughn, Myer, Shiloh, Siena, and Ayla.
Bob loved Scotland where he lived as a child; Cranford where he and Lee raised their children; Massachusetts where he was raised (including Fox Hollow Resort where he served on the Board of Directors); and Hilton Head where they had their second home and he served on the Board of Directors of the HOA. His involvements in the Cranford community were many, including political committees and the Township Planning Board. He was a loyal member of the First Presbyterian Church for more than 60 years and served as Elder and Trustee and did anything that needed to be done. For many summers, he enjoyed playing tennis at the Cranford Swim Club. Bob was proud of his service to our country in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Navy Reserves. The many people who have reached out to the family have frequently described Bob as a good man, smart and kind, who always saw the world at its best. Until the last moment of his life, he said he felt wonderful. He had a life well-lived with many, many good memories.
The family wants to thank all the doctors, nurses, and therapists at St. Barnabas Medical Center, RWJ University Hospital Rahway, Care Connection Rahway, and Alaris at Riverton for taking good care of him for the last few months. Their support for the family is much appreciated.
In lieu of flowers donations in his memory to the First Presbyterian Church of Cranford or the Gary Sinise Foundation (supporting veterans) would be appreciated.
A Memorial Service is planned for 2:00 pm on Sunday, June 6th at the First Presbyterian Church of Cranford. The service will also be live streamed; the link will be available at firsprescranford.org. Inurnment will be private for the family.
