Obituary

Gunter C. Aschmies, age 80, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2020, in Summit, New Jersey.

Gunter was born September 25, 1939 to Hans and Anni Bendix Aschmies in Memel, Germany. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, including his twin brother Horst. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 18, and later settled in Cranford, NJ. He worked during the day and earned his bachelor's degree in business at night from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He went on to become a small business owner in Elizabeth, NJ.

Gunter was also a beloved husband, father and Opa (grandfather), who for many years of his life, dedicated his time to help others by volunteering with the local Boy Scouts of America and the Freemasons. Gunter loved Soccer; he was the head soccer coach for the Cranford Soccer Club and a longtime season ticket holder for the New York Cosmos.

Gunter loved the outdoors; camping and fishing were his main passions, he passed along those same passions to his sons and grandchildren. He fulfilled his love for the outdoors through his many years of involvement with the Boys Scouts of America. Gunter was a motivator, It's remembered during a group whitewater rafting trip, he would yell, "fight the raging river!" the moment the rafts hit the first set of rapids. Everyone would laugh and proceeded to paddle downstream while having water splash fights amongst other rafters. Since then this battle cry has become the family mantra. Fight the raging river Opa and may you rest in peace.

Gunter was an incredible Opa; his greatest pleasure was spending time with his grandchildren. He never passed up an opportunity to cheer them on at their various sporting events as well as take them to the Orange Avenue Pool for a swim.

Gunter is survived by his best friend and wife of 53 years, Marie Ann (née Seitz). He was the loving father of, John (Nancy) Aschmies of Cranford, NJ and Scott (Shawna) Aschmies of Philadelphia, PA. He was the proud grandfather to Trevor, Lindsay, Gavin and Sterling.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, July 25th, at 10 a.m. at Saint Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia, N.J.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to The Boys Scouts of America – Troop 80, 95 Cranford Ave, Cranford, NJ 07016
