Tribute & Message From The Family

Loving Mother, and Grandmother

Eileen Howard, (nee Tangney), 93, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, 18 April 2020, after a long illness. Her death was not related to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

'Lile' was born in Rosnacarthna Mor, Faha, Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland and attended Faha Cross School and The Presentation Convent Secondary School, Killarney, where her life long love of learning was kindled. She worked and attended nursing school at Dulwich Hospital, London, England before emigrating to the United States in 1953. She worked several years at The Margaret Hague Hospital, Jersey City, and Alexian Brothers Hospital and Elizabeth General Hospital, both in Elizabeth, before settling with her family in Rahway, where she would continue to serve the community as a Rahway Hospital nurse, rising to become Assistant Director of Nursing, Evenings before retiring in 1991. She was a long- time parishioner of Saint Mary's Church, Rahway, and after moving to Cranford in 1995, of Saint Michael's Church, Cranford.

Mrs. Howard was predeceased by her husband fellow Kerryman John, in 2016, her four siblings: Michael, William, Noreen and Paddy and her niece Colleen Tangney Mattioli. She is survived by her five (5) children, Jerry, Mary, Agnes, Patrick and Jill, their spouses and seven (7) grand children.

She was a self-sacrificing and loving mother, a solicitous and dedicated nurse, and a decisive and practical manager. "Beannacht De ort!"

I worked with Mrs. Howard for many years at Rahway Hospital. She was the face of the 3 to 11 shift during my time in the Emergency Room. My sympathy to the Howard family in remembrance of this wonderful Kerry woman from this Galway girl. May she rest in peace.

Mrs Howard was my 3-11 supervisor from 1980 to 1988. I was a very green nurse. She was a mentor and a great inspiration to me. I am a better nurse for having her as a mentor. My deepest condolences to you and your entire family at this time. She and your family will be in my prayers.

I had the pleasure of working with Eileen for many years at Rahway Hospital. We were 3-11 nursing supervisors together as well as working together in other areas. She brought calm and reason to every situation. It was almost impossible to ruffle her feathers! She taught me so much and I loved working with her. She was a great support in helping me survive raising four children, again with her calm wisdom. ( and more than a few stories about the antics of all of you!). She will always hold a special place in my heart and my memories of wonderful years at Rahway Hospital. Sending warm wishes and deepest sympathy to all of you. May she Rest In Peace.merm
